Bundesliga; will Thomas Muller be transferred?

Publisert: (updated )

The German football legend Lothar Matthaus believes Thomas Muller no longer has a clear role in Bayern Munich. He also believes Thomas Muller will struggle to get back into the team under Carlo Ancelotti.

The Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti took over from Pep Guardiola this season and hasn’t been able to utilise the qualities of the German forward, who has in turn failed to produce anything similar to his best form.

Thomas Muller’s, previously regarded as one of the best players in the world, form for club and country down the years has seen him strongly targeted by Manchester United, though a move never materialised.

It’s now looking increasingly like the 27-year-old could be surplus to requirements after Ancelotti’s changes at the Allianz Arena, and Matthaus has expressed his doubts over his future with the Bavarian giants.

‘It will be really tough for Muller to fight himself back into the chosen 11 in the second half of the season,’ Matthaus wrote in his column for Bild.

‘There is not really a position in Ancelotti’s formation that suits him.

‘Arjen Robben is a better option on the right wing and Bayern do not really play with a support striker.

‘They are playing an attacking midfielder behind Robert Lewandowski instead and I think Thiago Alcantara is the right man for that role. He is much more flexible than Muller.’
